Confronting the Question of Clinical Faculty Status

    Get PDF
This Article examines the status of clinical faculty in American law schools, and the American Bar Association\u27s proposed Rule 405(e), which would impose clinician job security as a requirement of law school accreditation. The authors argue that as clinical education has become an accepted part of American legal education, law schools have been asked to enhance the status of clinicians teaching in their clinical programs. The authors analyze the various security arrangements permitted by Standard 405(e), recommends use of the regular tenure track option, and specifies guidelines to be utilized in decisions to hire and tenure clinicians

Differentiating among stages of cognitive impairment in aging: Version 3 of the Uniform Data Set (UDS) neuropsychological test battery and MoCA index scores

Introduction: Federally funded Alzheimer\u27s Disease Centers in the United States have been using a standardized neuropsychological test battery as part of the National Alzheimer\u27s Coordinating Center Uniform Data Set (UDS) since 2005. Version 3 (V3) of the UDS replaced the previous version (V2) in 2015. We compared V2 and V3 neuropsychological tests with respect to their ability to distinguish among the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) global scores of 0, 0.5, and 1. Methods: First, we matched participants receiving V2 tests (V2 cohort) and V3 tests (V3 cohort) in their cognitive functions using tests common to both versions. Then, we compared receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) area under the curve in differentiating CDRs for the remaining tests. Results: Some V3 tests performed better than V2 tests in differentiating between CDR 0.5 and 0, but the improvement was limited to Caucasian participants. Discussion: Further efforts to improve the ability for early identification of cognitive decline among diverse racial groups are required

Electroconvection in a Suspended Fluid Film: A Linear Stability Analysis

A suspended fluid film with two free surfaces convects when a sufficiently large voltage is applied across it. We present a linear stability analysis for this system. The forces driving convection are due to the interaction of the applied electric field with space charge which develops near the free surfaces. Our analysis is similar to that for the two-dimensional B\'enard problem, but with important differences due to coupling between the charge distribution and the field. We find the neutral stability boundary of a dimensionless control parameter R{\cal R} as a function of the dimensionless wave number Īŗ{\kappa}. R{\cal R}, which is proportional to the square of the applied voltage, is analogous to the Rayleigh number. The critical values Rc{{\cal R}_c} and Īŗc{\kappa_c} are found from the minimum of the stability boundary, and its curvature at the minimum gives the correlation length Ī¾0{\xi_0}. The characteristic time scale Ļ„0{\tau_0}, which depends on a second dimensionless parameter P{\cal P}, analogous to the Prandtl number, is determined from the linear growth rate near onset. Ī¾0{\xi_0} and Ļ„0{\tau_0} are coefficients in the Ginzburg-Landau amplitude equation which describes the flow pattern near onset in this system. We compare our results to recent experiments.Comment: 36 pages, 7 included eps figures, submitted to Phys Rev E. For more info, see http://mobydick.physics.utoronto.ca

Biological Network Exploration with Cytoscape 3

Cytoscape is one of the most popular openā€source software tools for the visual exploration of biomedical networks composed of protein, gene, and other types of interactions. It offers researchers a versatile and interactive visualization interface for exploring complex biological interconnections supported by diverse annotation and experimental data, thereby facilitating research tasks such as predicting gene function and constructing pathways. Cytoscape provides core functionality to load, visualize, search, filter, and save networks, and hundreds of Apps extend this functionality to address specific research needs. The latest generation of Cytoscape (version 3.0 and later) has substantial improvements in function, user interface, and performance relative to previous versions. This protocol aims to jumpā€start new users with specific protocols for basic Cytoscape functions, such as installing Cytoscape and Cytoscape Apps, loading data, visualizing and navigating the networks, visualizing network associated data (attributes), and identifying clusters. It also highlights new features that benefit experienced users. Curr. Protoc. Bioinform. 47:8.13.1ā€8.13.24. Drivers' willingness to engage with their mobile phone: the influence of phone function and road demand

Drivers normally elect whether or not to engage with a secondary task while driving. This study aimed to determine whether driversā€™ willingness to engage with their mobile phone is affected by demands from the roadway environment and if these effects are more pronounced for some phone functions compared with others. Fifteen video clips were played to 20 participants representing different road scenarios, and therefore demands, such as driving on an empty auto route or turning right on a main arterial road. The participants then used three point Likert scales to rate their willingness to place or answer a call and send or read a text and a five point scale to rate the perceived riskiness of placing and answering a call only. Participants were also asked to think aloud when making their judgements so further insight could be gained. It was found that willingness to engage was affected by both the perceived roadway demands and the phone function under consideration. The perceived riskiness also affected willingness to engage when placing a call only. The think aloud element indicated the participantsā€™ reasoning behind these findings as well as identifying possible future areas of research
